10 Tips for Baby Bath Safety

No matter what, baby bath safety is of the utmost importance.  After all, a baby can drown in mere seconds and as they cannot control their own movements, if you are not within arms reach you might not get to your baby until it is too late.  There is never any room for error when it comes to baby bath safety, so the following is a list of 10 tips so that you can ensure a fun and safe bath time for all.

Tip 1

Ensure that all the supplies you will need are set up and ready to go before you put the baby in the bath.  This means bath seat, soap, towel, toys, and clothes for after the bath.  Make a list, check it twice, and be prepared.  Always keep these items within arms reach when you are bathing baby.

Tip 2

Make sure you water heater never heats your water above 120 degrees.  This way you will avoid potential burns caused by water that is too hot.

Tip 3

NEVER leave the room for any reason during the bath.  Phone calls can wait.  If the house is on fire, then you can leave the room, but baby will be with you.

Tip 4

Make sure the room in which you are bathing baby is warm and not drafty.  The little one’s entire body will be exposed and you want to be sure it is warm.  A space heater in the bathroom might be ideal for this.

Tip 5

Only use the most natural, scent-free soaps and shampoos on baby and never use any soap on baby’s face.  Definitely don’t use anything that is made for an adult.  Their skin is very sensitive.

Tip 6

Put a towel on the bottom of the bathtub or sink in which you are bathing baby so that he or she doesn’t slide around.

Tip 7

Wash baby’s hair last.  You can start with the face and then work your way down the rest of the body.  Then wrap the baby up in a warm towel and hold baby over the water to wash the hair.  Most of the heat a baby loses in from the top of the head, so you want to make sure that stays dry until the end.  Once washed, cover the head.

Tip 8

Do not wash inside baby’s ears and never use Q-tips on a baby.

Tip 9

Never use oils, lotions, or powders on a baby.  They are not necessary and can be harmful, especially the powders.

Tip 10

If you use a bath seat for baby, then there are a few things you should know.  Never lift the bath seat with the baby in it and don’t place it on non-slip surfaces unless the manufacturer’s instructions say the seat is made for those types of surfaces.  If the seat is tippy with baby in it, then get rid of it and buy another one.

As you can see, there are so many things to think about when it comes to baby bath safety.  The best thing to do is to be prepared and then you can simply enjoy this wonderful time bonding with your little one.
